Setting up your first home in Dubai: what to buy first
Start by checking what your Dubai home already contains, then prioritise a place to sleep, basic cooking and drinking-water equipment, cleaning supplies, and the phone, laptop and charging setup you need each day. If travelling with a child, put the car-seat model and vehicle-fit questions before optional electronics; buy a TV and extra appliances after measuring their spaces. Before ordering electrical items for use in the UAE, request the supplied plug and charger details, relevant product approval evidence, and written warranty service arrangements. Use the guides below to work through each purchase, and keep the exact model information and dated invoice together.

What to check in the UAE
- Plug and voltage
Request a clear photo of the supplied charger's rating plate and plug before ordering a phone, laptop or mains-powered household item. MoIAT's technical-requirements sheet, row 28 for low-voltage electrical products, lists BS 1363 plugs with earth and fuse for Class I appliances, and BS 1363 plugs with a dummy plastic earth pin for Class II appliances; it lists BS 546 separately for 15-ampere appliances. Ask the supplier which requirements apply to the exact charger or appliance. Read its input voltage and frequency and compare them with the intended supply. The sheet is undated, and it does not establish the charger classification for a specific model.

- TDRA type approval
For a phone or laptop with radio connectivity, request the TDRA conformity evidence for the exact equipment supplied. TDRA Type Approval Policy Version 4 covers telecommunications units, including units integrated into other equipment. It specifies marking on external packaging and the online device page, and device marking or accessible operating-system information where physical marking is impracticable. For embedded units, section 10.1.2 distinguishes independently identifiable modules from fully integrated units, for which a conformity statement card belongs on the packaging or in the manual. Ask for the final Type Approval Certificate and match its equipment identity: section 9.8 says marking using a preliminary approval number is not final approval.

- Energy efficiency label
Before choosing a TV for the new home, ask for the applicable UAE efficiency label and match it to the complete model code being supplied. MoIAT's published technical-requirements sheet lists televisions among products requiring energy-efficiency performance testing, and the Ministry provides a product-efficiency label service. Save a readable label photo beside the model specification rather than accepting a label for another screen in the same range. Ask the supplier to confirm the current requirements and the label applicable to this model. This check does not calculate electricity use or promise a particular household bill.

- Child restraint approval
If buying a child car seat, ask which named approval reference covers the exact model. MoIAT's regulated-products sheet, row 57, identifies Cabinet Resolution No. 27 of 2017 and lists UNECE R44 or UNECE R129 under Annex 1, and FMVSS 213 under Annex 2. Request matching approval documentation and compare the model identifier with the actual seat label. A description saying only 'international standard' does not identify one of these references. Before ordering a seat and base, compare the manufacturer's child-size limits and vehicle installation instructions with your child's measurements and intended vehicle. The sheet's revision date and current detailed applicability remain unconfirmed.

- Child car seats
Keep the child-seat question on the arrival shopping checklist. Ministerial Resolution No. 178 of 2017, violation schedule item 50, states that child seats are required for children under four years old. U.ae lists this resolution alongside Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024, but the consolidated current implementing article remains unverified here. This statement does not establish current detailed transport exceptions or replace the model-specific approval and installation checks. Use the related car-seat guide when preparing the product questions for your supplier.

- Power banks on flights
For a power bank you intend to carry on a flight, read the unit's battery-energy rating in Wh before ordering. GCAA's 2026 passenger table treats power banks as spare batteries: carry them in hand baggage and protect each individually against short circuits. Its ordinary lithium-ion spare-battery entry has a 100 Wh limit. Keep the power bank with you if a cabin bag is taken for hold carriage, using protective storage that prevents contacts touching metal objects. Ask the operating airline about the exact battery and journey before buying. The ordinary entry does not itself establish acceptance of a larger unit; use the related power-bank guide to prepare the rating and approval questions.

- Installed battery on flights
Check a laptop's installed battery separately from a loose battery or power bank. GCAA's 2026 passenger table includes laptops in its portable-electronic-device entry: an installed lithium-ion battery up to 100 Wh may travel in cabin or checked baggage without operator approval for that entry, subject to its conditions. Protect the device from damage and inadvertent activation; in checked baggage it must be completely switched off. The entry limits each person to 15 portable electronic devices, with operator approval for more. State or operator variations may restrict these provisions. Confirm the operating airline's conditions and how to handle a bag taken for the hold; the spare-battery rule is different.

- Consumer invoice
Keep the dated invoice and compare its goods description with the items delivered. The cited original 2020 text of Federal Law No. 15 of 2020, Article 8(3)โ(4), requires the supplier's trade name and address, goods or service details and price, and quantity where applicable. It requires Arabic on the invoice and permits another language alongside it. Save your order specification, model labels and charger details together so you can identify what was supplied. This is not a verified current consolidation of the law. The checklist provides no current claim deadline or unconditional return entitlement.

- Warranty and after sales
Before ordering, ask who will accept the exact item for warranty service in the UAE, the service address, the covered period and the applicable conditions. The cited original 2020 text of Federal Law No. 15 of 2020, Article 10(1), addresses suppliers honouring warranties, providing required spare parts and maintenance, replacement or refund, and after-sales service during the specified period. Retain the supplier's written answer with the invoice and item specification. The current consolidated wording has not been verified. It does not prove a particular manufacturer's coverage for an imported or regional model, or a universal warranty period.

Before you pay
Take this to the store
- Split your list into arrival needs and later additions. Mark each item as already provided, brought with you, or still needed; start with sleeping, a simple meal setup, cleaning supplies and the devices and chargers you use daily. List the bedding, cooking utensils and cleaning tools you actually need alongside the mattress and appliances. Choose one item at a time from the missing essentials before adding a TV or extra appliances. Keep the car-seat questions near the top when a child will be travelling with you.
- Measure before choosing: record the bed frame or sleeping-space dimensions, countertop depth and width, available appliance clearance and the intended TV position. Write the measurements beside the exact model dimensions and installation instructions. Include the delivery route through doors and lifts in your measurement notes, then ask the supplier to clarify any fit or assembly question in writing.
- Send one written request for each electrical model: exact model code, included charger and accessories, rating-plate and plug photos, applicable approval or efficiency-label evidence, and warranty service arrangements. Compare the response with the order before accepting the item. Keep unanswered questions on the list instead of assuming that another product in the same brand range has matching documents.
- Create a folder for each purchase containing the order, dated invoice, model-label photos, applicable certificates, manual and written warranty terms. For travel batteries, add the Wh rating and the operating airline's response separately for installed and spare batteries. On delivery, compare the item and accessories with the saved specification and raise any mismatch using that written record.
Questions
What should I buy before ordering a TV or extra kitchen appliances?
Make an inventory of what is already provided, then list the missing items needed for sleeping, preparing a simple meal and using your daily phone or laptop. Measure the bed space, kitchen counter and intended TV position before selecting models. If you need a child car seat, gather the child's measurements, vehicle details and model-specific installation instructions early. Use the related buying guides to turn those needs into written product questions rather than ordering everything at once.
Can I rely on a plug photo or a charger described as suitable for the UAE?
Ask for a photo of the actual supplied charger and rating plate, its model identifier, and confirmation of the applicable plug requirements. MoIAT's low-voltage sheet distinguishes BS 1363 arrangements for Class I and Class II appliances and lists BS 546 separately for 15-ampere appliances. Compare the stated input voltage and frequency with the intended supply. The sheet does not determine the charger classification for your particular device.
Does a TDRA mark on a phone or laptop box settle the approval question?
Request the final certificate matching the supplied phone or laptop's radio equipment. TDRA's policy permits companies to begin marking using a preliminary approval number and says that this is not final approval. Check the packaging and online device page, and ask how the device or embedded unit is identified in the marking, operating-system information or statement card. Keep the model code and certificate reference together.
Can my power bank travel in the same checked bag as my laptop?
GCAA treats the power bank as a spare battery, requiring hand baggage and individual short-circuit protection; its ordinary lithium-ion spare-battery entry has a 100 Wh limit. A laptop with an installed lithium-ion battery up to 100 Wh falls under a different entry permitting cabin or checked carriage under the table's conditions. In checked baggage the laptop must be completely switched off and protected from damage and inadvertent activation. Confirm the operating airline's conditions for both items before travel.
What should I save for warranty service after moving into the home?
Keep the dated invoice, written order specification, actual model labels and the supplier's warranty service address, covered period and conditions. Ask who will receive the exact item for service in the UAE and retain that answer. The original 2020 consumer-law text addresses Arabic invoices and supplier warranty and after-sales arrangements. Its current consolidated wording remains unverified, and it does not establish a particular manufacturer's coverage or a universal warranty period.
